The Boardwalk Hotel and Casino evolved from a 1960s Holiday Inn property, later carrying names including the Viscount before becoming the Coney Island-themed Boardwalk. MGM Mirage acquired the property and closed the Boardwalk in January 2006 as it assembled land for the massive CityCenter development. ARIA became the centerpiece of that project and opened on December 16, 2009. The transformation from the modest Boardwalk to the multi-billion-dollar CityCenter complex captures the extraordinary increase in scale that reshaped the Strip during the 1990s and 2000s.
