The Dunes opened in the 1950s and became known as the 'Miracle in the Desert.' Over the decades it grew into a major resort with a high-rise tower, a large golf course and the Casino de Paris production show. By the 1980s, however, the property was struggling against a new generation of larger Strip resorts. Steve Wynn purchased the Dunes in 1992 and announced plans for a new luxury resort. In October 1993, much of the Dunes and its giant neon sign came down in a highly publicized implosion. Five years later, Bellagio opened on the site. The change from the Dunes to Bellagio is one of the clearest examples of Las Vegas reinventing the same piece of land for a new era.
