The project occupies land associated with the former El Rancho and Algiers hotel sites on the north end of Las Vegas Boulevard. The El Rancho on this site traced its own lineage through earlier names including Thunderbird and Silverbird before closing in the early 1990s; it was imploded in 2000. The Fontainebleau project later rose on the assembled site, but construction stalled during the financial crisis and the unfinished blue tower became a Las Vegas landmark of a very different kind. After years of ownership changes and unrealized plans, development resumed and Fontainebleau Las Vegas finally opened in December 2023. The result is a modern luxury resort sitting on land that reflects both the classic casino era and one of the longest construction sagas in Strip history.
