The Hacienda opened in 1956, when this end of Las Vegas Boulevard was far less developed than it is today. The resort expanded over the years and became an important south-Strip landmark. Its history included Judy Bayley, who became one of Nevada's most important women in casino ownership after taking over the property following her husband's death. The Hacienda closed in December 1996 and was imploded on New Year's Eve, exactly 25 years after Judy Bayley's death. Construction of the project that became Mandalay Bay followed, and the new resort opened in March 1999. The modern tropical resort therefore sits on a site with more than half a century of casino history.
