Before the current resort opened in 1993, the property included the Marina Hotel & Casino, a mid-rise Strip resort that opened in 1975. Kirk Kerkorian acquired the Marina and surrounding land while assembling the site for a new MGM Grand. Unlike many Las Vegas redevelopment projects, the Marina tower was not simply imploded. Engineers determined that the structure could be reused, so it was renovated, wrapped into the new complex and became part of the MGM Grand. That makes the property especially interesting for visitors: a physical portion of an earlier Strip hotel survives inside one of Las Vegas's largest resorts. The current MGM Grand opened on December 18, 1993, originally with a strong Wizard of Oz theme and a family-oriented theme park. The resort later moved away from that original theme, but the older Marina connection remains one of the most overlooked pieces of the property's history.
