From 1952 until 1996, the site was home to the Sands Hotel and Casino, a resort closely tied to the Rat Pack era and the Copa Room. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and many other major entertainers helped make the Sands a symbol of mid-century Las Vegas. Howard Hughes bought the resort in 1967, and Sheldon Adelson later acquired it in 1988. The Sands closed in June 1996 and was imploded that November. Adelson then developed a completely different vision for the site: an all-suite resort inspired by Venice, Italy. The Venetian opened in 1999, replacing a low-slung Rat Pack landmark with one of the largest and most elaborate themed resorts ever built on the Strip.
