The Desert Inn opened in 1950 and became one of the defining early resorts of the Las Vegas Strip. Its golf course, added in the early 1950s, attracted celebrities and professional golfers and became a major part of the property's identity. Steve Wynn purchased the Desert Inn in 2000. Most of the old resort towers were demolished between 2001 and 2004 as the new Wynn Las Vegas rose on the site. Wynn opened on April 28, 2005. The golf tradition survived the transition: the modern Wynn Golf Club occupies land tied directly to the Desert Inn course. That continuity makes Wynn one of the best examples of a new Las Vegas resort preserving part of an older property's identity.
